Jane Kathleen Marshall Carroll was born on September 21, 1943, in Marshall, Texas, the first of three children born to James Marshall, Jr. and Corinne McMillian Marshall. At a very early age, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior.
Her formal education began in Catholic elementary school, then transitioned to public school where she attended and graduated from Como Junior/Senior High School in Fort Worth, Texas. There, she played oboe in the marching band, and was a majorette. After graduating in 1961, Jane entered Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, where she majored in nursing.
In 1963 Jane was united in marriage with Johnie L. Carroll, Jr. Their union welcomed two children, daughters Pamela and Yolanda. Throughout her life, she remained a devoted mother, instilling in her children the importance of education, supporting and loving family, faith, and giving to others.
A hard-working person, Jane labored diligently to support her children’s education. She was particularly proud of their academic and professional achievements, as well as the accomplishments of her wider family. For more than 20 years, she worked in various roles in the banking industry, including serving as vice president of lending. When Jane switched careers to enter the dental field, she worked her way from dental assistant to business office manager, retiring from Heartland Dental in 2020.
Throughout her life, she maintained a generous spirit, giving to numerous charitable organizations, including Irving Cares and the American Civil Liberties Union, and was always willing to lend a helping hand to family members, friends, and neighbors. Jane also gave to numerous political campaigns, inspired by her deep belief in justice and equality for all persons.
An avid reader, she would often shut out the world to sit down and finish a good book and was particularly fond of Black romance novels. When she wasn’t reading, she was staying on top of local, national, and world news by watching MSNBC – being knowledgeable of current events was very important to her. Jane also enjoyed crocheting and watching medical and crime TV dramas.
After a brief battle with lung cancer, Jane passed away in a hospice care facility on September 13, 2021, with her daughters by her side. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Corinne Marshall, and is survived by her daughters, Pamela Carroll (John Pickens), and Yolanda Carroll; two brothers, James Marshall III (Jennifer), and Kim Marshall (Deborah) and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
From her daughter, Pamela: “I thank God that he decided to make Jane Kathleen Marshall Carroll our mother, and I pray that I become half the woman she was in her life. Even while she was battling excruciating pain during her illness, she took the time to remind Yolanda and me never to forget that we are responsible for each other and the importance of doing our very best. She leaves us with a loving legacy to carry on until we meet her again.”
