Evelyn Moretta Carpenter was born December 4, 1940, in Hainesville, Texas, to Robert and Zelmer Newman. She went to be with her Lord and Savior on September 27, 2024, in North Richland Hills, Texas, surrounded by her loving family. She was 83 years old.
Evelyn grew up in Fort Worth, Texas, where she graduated from Polytechnic High School in 1959. She attended Harmony Baptist Church and was very active in the choir. She loved to sing solos and duets for the worship services.
Evelyn and Don have been long standing members of North Richland Hills Baptist Church (now Cross Church). Evelyn was active in and served on mission trips with the choir. She was also involved in many women's ministry activities and her Sunday school class. Her faith was something she lived out in her everyday life. She was a wonderful example of a godly woman who willingly gave her time, money, and love to her family and those in need. For example, she felt led by the Lord to fund Christian private school education for her grandchildren. This was such a blessing to them and their parents. She was also involved in Good News Clubs, Child Evangelism Fellowship, Vacation Bible School and various church functions and events.
Evelyn loved to travel and was always up for an adventure. She and Don took many trips together with friends and family making lifelong memories. Riding camels in the holy lands, helicopter rides in Hawaii, whitewater rafting in Colorado, and hot air balloon rides in New Mexico are only a few examples of her adventurous spirit.
Evelyn is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Don; daughters Deborah Alvarez (Javier) and Angela Bates (Rick); sisters Madeline Fanning and Maurine Gordon; grandchildren Jared Bates (Mariah), Isabel Mann (Kyah), Marissa Shier (Nic), Amanda Bates and Evelyn Alvarez; great-grandchild Alexander Shier; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents Zelmer Bell Dodson and Robert Edkar Newman, and sister Melba Curry.
