Sandy was born in Van Meter, Iowa August 3, 1939 to his parents of Clarence Edgar and Frances Alberta Miller. He graduated with the class of 1957 at Menlo H.S. in Menlo, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963, and was stationed at Ft. Riley, Kansas. Following his military service, he graduated from DeVry Tech in Chicago, Illinois. In July 1966, he moved to Fort Worth with his wife, Maxine, to begin employment at General Dynamics. He later worked at Southwestern Bell for many years, and ultimately retired at TTI, Inc. in July 2010.
Sandy had a love for music and singing. He was a square dance caller for many years after moving to Texas, where he and Maxine became devoted members of the local square dance community in Fort Worth during the better part of the 80s.
He had a distinct love for country music, and while having no formal training, he learned to play his favorite country and gospel songs by ear on the piano. Many nights at home, you could hear Sandy singing and playing his favorite songs on the piano for an audience of sometimes only one, Maxine.
Some saw Sandy as a jokester, commonly razzing friends and family to be funny, but always out of respect and love. He enjoyed watching sports on television, changing the channel from golf tournaments to Mavs’ or Ranger games, and frequently yelling his frustrations during Dallas Cowboy games. He also found interest in many shows, enjoying reruns of Two and a Half Men, Everybody Loves Raymond, NCIS and Bull.
Sandy’s greatest passion after retirement was helping Maxine with various projects around the house and keeping his lawn looking immaculate. He was so proud of his lawn that, at times, well, all of the time, he would compete with the neighbors to make sure he was the first to mow his lawn before they did their lawn; a competition that he enjoyed up until the last day of his life.
Sandy will be loved and missed by all of his friends and family. He was a great character of life and will be admired by his loved ones forever.
He is survived by a sister, Marles Moore, of Bettendorf, Iowa. He leaves behind his life partner and best friend, Maxine, three children: Jeff and wife Jessica, Steve and Robert; four grandchildren: Malia, Nathan, Jacqueline, and Josephine.
He is preceded in death by his parents, seven sisters and two brothers. He acquired the nickname “Sandy” from his sisters at a young age because of his sandy blond hair.
