Bruce Eric Thompson, 67, was born on May 22nd, 1957 to Coril Whitt Thompson and Helen Maryland Thompson. He accepted Christ early in life and was baptized by his grandfather, the late Rev. Joseph H. Thompson, at Residence Baptist Church. He loved and served Christ faithfully throughout the remainder of his life.
Bruce grew up in the Mechanicville neighborhood and attendedschools in the Terrebonne Parish School System where he was an honor roll student and graduated from South Terrebonne High School in 1975. After high school, he joined the United States Air Force, serving from 1975 to 1981. He attained the rank of Senior Airman prior to his honorable discharge. Following his military service, Bruce attended Long Beach City College where he received his certification in electronics and avionics. During the span of his work career, Bruce worked as an electronics technician for the Long Beach Naval Shipyard, Boeing (formerly McDonnell Douglas) and Rockwell Collins where he retired from in 2021.
Bruce attended various churches throughout his lifetime as he lived in different states. His passion was evangelism and he served in outreach and prison ministries for many years sharing the Gospel with any willing to listen. He strived to be a light to coworkers, friends, and family members. He was truly “[always prepared] to make a defense to anyone who [asked him] for a reason for the hope that [was in him]” (1 Peter 3:15). He spent countless hours reading and listening to the Bible and was a wellspring of knowledge and wisdom.
Bruce is described by his children Ashley Thompson Baylor and Jonathan Thompson as a loving father, faithful provider and spiritual leader. The highlight of his week was the blessing of taking care of his grandchildren, Nadia, Aidan, and Dain.
Bruce often expressed feelings of gratitude to God for the life he was given, a life that he didn’t expect to live. In 1998 and 1999, he fought a hard battle with multiple myeloma cancer, coming close to death many times. But God healed him and gave him 25 more years - years he considered to be “bonus years.”
