Walter A. McComb Jr.

Walter A. McComb Jr., known fondly as Walt to friends and family, passed away peacefully in his hometown of Fort Wayne, Indiana on the 13th of December, 2023, at the age of 88. Born on May 12, 1935 to the late Walter McComb Sr. and Mildred Mary Magdalene McComb, in the same city he would later serve with distinction, Walt's life was marked by dedication to his community, a love for his family, and a career that set a standard of excellence in his field. A proud graduate of North Side High School, Walt went on to earn his funeral director's degree from the Indianapolis College of Mortuary Science. This education laid the groundwork for a professional journey that would span over 65 years. His commitment to his craft was evident as he became a licensed Funeral Director, not just serving families in their times of need but also setting pioneering standards in the industry. Walt's professional accolades were numerous, but perhaps none so telling as his tenure with D.O. McComb and Sons. Under his leadership, it became the largest funeral home in Indiana, a testament to his vision and dedication. He expanded the family business by building and acquiring seven funeral homes in the Fort Wayne area, ensuring that the McComb touch of care and quality reached as many as possible. A trailblazer, Walt was one of the first funeral directors in Indiana to advertise on television. In 1986, he once again led the way by introducing database marketing to the funeral home industry. His innovative spirit was matched only by his generosity; he operated D.O. McComb and Sons ambulance service for many years, offering free emergency services to the community. In the last year of this service, 1978, they served over 5,000 families, all without charge. Walt introduced Fort Wayne to Dr. Alan Wolfelt, who is a renowned writer on death, grief and mourning; and for 27 years, D.O. McComb and Sons sponsored a two day seminar on dealing with grief. The first day was for the recently bereaved, and the second day was for caregivers, such as nurses, doctors and hospice workers. The combined community participation touched over 1,200 people each year. Walt's life was not confined to his professional achievements. He was a great family man, whose love and wisdom touched all those around him. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jean L. McComb; and his sons, Douglas M. McComb and David W. (Cheryl) McComb. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Brenden Walter (Libby) McComb, Jannelle (Brad) Thompson, Jessica (Josh) Phegley, Nicole McComb, Nikalette (Jimmy) Clarke and David W. (Annabella) McComb Jr.; and great-grandchildren, Stella Phegley, Calvin Phegley Elliana Thompson and Molly McComb who will carry forward the values he instilled. Outside of work, Walt was an avid power boater and a lover of the open water. His passion for sport fishing was well-known, as were his annual golf outings, which he approached with the same enthusiasm he brought to every aspect of his life. Selfless, wise, and loving—these words only begin to describe the man Walt was. His impact on the Fort Wayne community is immeasurable, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him. Walter A. McComb Jr. leaves behind a legacy of service and a family that will remember him for the generous spirit he embodied every day. He was proud of his membership to the board of the American Red Cross, Home Loan Bank and other community boards. He was proud to never turn away a family without funds for a funeral. Walt literally gave away thousands of funerals, at no cost, to the poor; as well as local fallen police and firefighters who died in the line of duty. He was an enthusiastic supporter of our military professionals, and proud of sponsoring an entire Honor Flight through his own McComb Family Foundation. He created a scholarship fund at the University of St. Francis benefiting nurses; and most recently giving a substantial contribution for the stained glass for the Oratory of St. Mary Magdalene at Saint Vincent de Paul Parish Perpetual Adoration Chapel. Walt's journey through life was one of purpose and passion, and though he has set sail on his final voyage, the wake he leaves behind will ripple through the lives of those he touched for generations to come. His was a life well-lived, and he will be remembered with affection and respect by his family, friends, and the countless lives he enriched through his personal and professional endeavors. Rest in peace, Walter A. McComb Jr., your memory and service to the community will be cherished and contributions to our world will not be forgotten.
