Virginia Pearce Tufts, 97, died in Fort Wayne, Indiana on Tuesday, December 10, 2013. “Sally,” a nickname given to her in childhood by her oldest brother, was born in Houghton, Michigan where she spent her childhood. A graduate of Suomi College, she worked in a variety of settings such as Brigmen Russell Ice Cream and Dairy, Hancock Bank, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
On June17, 1944 she married Charles Fulton Tufts, ‘the love of her life.’ They were married for 49 years and had two children: Jane Elizabeth Tufts of Chicago, Illinois and Charles Philip Tufts of Palatine, Illinois. Sally was the grandmother of 5.
Sally and Chuck moved to Ft. Wayne from Manhasset, New York in 1979 and immediately felt at home.
A lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, Sally was active in churches in Houghton, Michigan; Port Washington, New York and Fort Wayne, Indiana. She also valued her membership in the Order of the Eastern Star, and served as a Worthy Matron of Houghton Chapter #304 (aka: Trillium Chapter). She became a Life Member of the OES in 1993.
Sally’s life will be celebrated in a memorial service at noon on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at the St. Joe United Methodist Church 6004 Reed Road in Fort Wayne. A reception will follow. Interment will be at Greenlawn Cemetery, Ft. Wayne, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Salvation Army would be appreciated.
