Robert Eugene Vollmer DDS, 81, returned to our Lord, September 30, 2024, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Fort Wayne, IN on September 7, 1943. He was the oldest of three children to the late Robert W. and Mary C. Vollmer (Sprunger).
Bob graduated from New Haven High School in 1961. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN in 1966 and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Butler University in Indianapolis, IN in 1967. He was employed as a project engineer at Eli Lilly in Indianapolis, IN for the next four years. Returning to school at the Medical Center in Indianapolis, IN. he received his Doctorate in Dental Surgery from Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1975. He was always very proud to mention that both of his children graduated from there also. He practiced general dentistry in Fort Wayne, IN for approximately forty years. Truly one of his greatest joys in life was treating his patients and becoming friends with them and his staff.
He enjoyed nearly all outdoors sports and activities, and also loved to read a wide variety of books. Some of his greatest memories came from time he shared with his loving wife at their vacation home in the Florida Keys (Marathon), just about thirty miles from Key West, FL. They enjoyed entertaining family and friends there for nearly twenty years. Blue Water fishing and exploring the pristine waters off the coral reefs was some of their favorite activities.
Bob was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church in Fort Wayne, IN. He was a supporting member of the Elks and Moose organizations, along with the Sons of the American Legion Post 82 for over fifty years. His professional memberships included, Isaac Knapp District Dental Society, Indiana Dental Association, and the American Dental Association.
Robert is survived by his loving wife of thirty-six years, Rosie Vollmer of Huntertown, IN; daughter, Sonya A. (Chris) Shively DDS (Vollmer); son, Randall E. Vollmer DDS; stepdaughters, Melanie A. (Dean) Timmerman and Patricia K. Burden; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Donald Ray Vollmer; sister, Cynthia Jean Murray (Vollmer); and two nephews.
Funeral Service will be 10:00 am Monday, October 7, 2024 at Covenant United Methodist Church, 10001 Coldwater Road, Fort Wayne, IN, with visitation one hour prior. Visitation also from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Sunday, October 6, 2024, at D.O. McComb and Sons Funeral Homes - Pine Valley Park, 1320 E. Dupont Road, Fort Wayne, IN. Private Burial at Riverview Cemetery, Churubusco, IN. Memorials may be made to Parkview Hospice or to the donors choice.
