Obituary of Philip John Schamehorn
Philip John Schamehorn, age 86, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, joined his Lord and Savior on Sunday, November 17, 2024. He was born December 3, 1937 in Detroit, Michigan to Philip Orville and Julia Irene (née Rector) Schamehorn and later became the older sibling to his brother, Thomas. Philip had various professions, which included time at the U.S. Postal Service and Ford Motor Company, but was called to the ministry after finding Christianity later in life, thanks to his brother. After accepting the Lord as his Savior, Phil attended Christ College in Irvine, California and the LCMS Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana, graduating in 1985. Philip served as vicar at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Titusville, Florida and served as a Pastor in San Antonio, Texas, Mineral Wells, Texas and St. Joseph, Michigan, before returning to Fort Wayne where he obtained his Ph.D. at the Seminary. While studying Philip served as interim Pastor at Our Hope Lutheran Church in Huntertown, Indiana and upon the completion of his degree, was called and installed as the full time Pastor at Our Hope, from where he would eventually retire. Asked to serve for a year as interim Pastor for a church in Ligonier, Indiana, Philip came out of retirement and spent an additional seven years with that congregation. His greatest joy in life was sharing God’s word and serving his Savior. A natural evangelist, he was fearless in his endeavor to spread Christ’s love. He knew how amazingly God had changed his life and wanted that for others. Pastor Philip was survived by his wife and selfless caregiver, Martha; daughters, Carolyn (Siefert) and Martha (McCool-Solis); son, Philip; eleven grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren, whom will all dearly miss their “Bumpa”. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Thomas; and daughter, Julia (Foreman). A calling at church for Philip will be held Saturday, November 23, 2024 from 9:30 am to 11:00 am at Our Hope Lutheran Church, 1826 Trinity Street, Huntertown, Indiana 46748 with a funeral service to directly follow. Burial and committal service at Riverview Cemetery, 11428 Carroll Road, Churubusco, Indiana 46723. Memorial contributions in Philip's name may be directed to our Hope Lutheran Church.
