Maria “Mary” DeJesus Torres, age 92, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 30, 2022 at Coventry Meadows Nursing Home in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Born on December 27, 1929 in Malakoff, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Pedro and Conception Hernandez. Mary moved with her family from Mexico to Fort Wayne, Indiana in search of a better life. She attended Elmhurst High School and began working as a nurse’s aide at Parnell Park Nursing Home. Later, she worked as a warehouse clerk at Super Market Service until her retirement in 2002. Mary was married to the late Ruperto Torres, and together they spent the next 40 years building a life together and watching their family grow. When not working, Mary enjoyed playing dominos and cards, working puzzles, reading, and baking. She liked to go camping and traveling with her husband, and spent many weekends enjoying family time, singing songs, and barbeques with her large family. She will be remembered fondly as a good grandmother to all of her grandchildren. Mary will be deeply missed by her surviving family, which includes her children, David (Leslie) Torres, Victor (Gretchen) Torres, and Josie Coffey; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Connie Peña; brother, Paul Hernandez; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ruperto Torres in 1989; her daughter, Helen Marlow; 5 sisters; 2 brothers; and her parents. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church, 7215 Saint Joe Road, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46835, with visitation one hour prior. Visitation will also be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 10, 2022 at Hockemeyer & Miller Funeral Home, 6131 Saint Joe Road, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46835. Burial at Catholic Cemetery, Fort Wayne, will follow the funeral service. The Mass of Christian Burial will be live streamed. To access please go to olghfw.com.
