LOUIS H. ANDREWS, 88, of Fort Wayne, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014, at his residence. He was born on April 7, 1926, in Fort Wayne. He was a graduate of North Side High School, in Fort Wayne, and joined the U.S. Navy immediately after graduation in June of 1944. He and his high-school sweetheart, Charlotte Buesching were married on Aug. 1, 1945. After his discharge from the Navy, he attended college at Kalamazoo College, Mich., and then graduated from Ball State. After starting in the insurance business with his uncle, he went out on his own, founded his own agency, Andrews & McFadden, and later became President of the merged O'Rourke, Andrews, and Maroney, Inc. insurance agency, one of the largest in the state. A natural athlete, he played football and basketball and ran track in high school, played football in college, and was an avid golfer who broke 70 and had holes-in-one playing both right-handed and left-handed and shot better than his age. He enjoyed playing bridge, poker, kuda and other card games; rooting for the New York Yankees; reading; being with friends, not only in Fort Wayne, but also in Naples, Fla. and Pinehurst, N.C.; and most of all, spending time with his family, all of whom he cared about and loved deeply. He was a member of Trinity English Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne Country Club, Fort Wayne Friars Club, and was also a Mason. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Charlotte Buesching Andrews; three children, Deborah (Paul) Helmke of Fort Wayne and Bloomington, Karen (David) Gilliatt of Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y. and Amy Bell of Fort Wayne; four grandchildren, Laura (Sean) Helmke Long, Kathryn Helmke, Olivia Gilliatt, and Andrew Bell; and two great-grandchildren, Nina and Nicholas Long. He was preceded in death by his father, Louis H. Andrews Sr.; mother, Ruth King Andrews Koenig; and stepfather, Otto W. Koenig. Funeral service is 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, 2014, at Trinity English Lutheran Church, 405 W. Wayne St., Fort Wayne (IN 46802), with visitation following the service. Memorials should be directed to the church.
