Obituary of Gwendolyn "Gwen" Louise (Gray) Williams
A Glimpse of My Journey Gwendolyn L. (Gray) Williams, 67, gained her wings on Thursday, February 23, 2023, at her home. Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on January 17, 1956, she was the daughter of Thomas Edward and Mae Lou Gray. During her early years Gwen’s introduction to Christ started at Friendship Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Phillip H. Love, Sr. She was very involved in church. She attended Sunday School, she was a gifted pianist and was the choir leader, “if you didn’t get that note just right at rehearsal, you’d be there all night.” Gwen was a 1974 graduate of Northrop High School. In her childhood upbringing she enjoyed playing jacks, babysitting and most importantly her passion was helping the old people with their ironing, “I bet that’s where she got all that talking from?” She loved her home cooked meals, playing spades and watching her cartoons! Gwen was formerly employed at Lincoln National Life Insurance Company - Fort Wayne for several years as a Key-Punch Operator. You could often hear her say… “I was stroking today– which meant she keyed the fastest, finished early, and now it was time for another smoke break!” She later journeyed into unfamiliar territory, Detroit. There she gained employment at Blue Cross Blue Shield. She enjoyed all the challenges and excitement in Detroit and all it had to offer but missed being away from family and friends; so, she relocated back to Fort Wayne. Upon her returning, one of her greatest dreams came true; she met and married Darnell Williams. Together they traveled, had fun and worked together at blending their family. Gwen is survived by her precious gift, her daughter, Renita L. Gray of San Antonio, TX; former husband, Darnell Williams; two bonus daughters, Alicia Whitley and Samantha Whitley; a cousin, Jack Griggs; adopted mother, Mrs. Mary Harris; god-daughter, Robin Pilot all of Fort Wayne and a host of extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Edward and Mae Lou Gray; brother, Earl Gray; aunt, Essie Griggs; and cousin, Pettie Griggs. A visitation for Gwen will be held Friday, March 17, 2023 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at D.O. McComb & Sons Funeral Homes - Lakeside Park, 1140 Lake Avenue, Fort Wayne, IN 46805, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM.
