Carol Ruth Savage Koenig

Carol Ruth Savage Koenig, age 95, of Fort Wayne, IN, passed away on Friday, February 3, 2023. Born on November 16, 1927 in Burdette, KS, she was the daughter of Hugh and Mildred (Tombaugh) Hayward. Their family relocated to Streator, IL where Carol met her future husband, Robert Savage and graduated as the high school valedictorian. She attended Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago (now Rush Presbyterian) and became a registered nurse. She worked as an R.N., married, and raised a family. Carol loved art and design, Italian opera, travel, reading, gardening, and especially her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She always had time to listen, encourage, and lend a hand. Carol was the consummate host at family gatherings and was always compassionate, kind, and caring. Later in life, after losing her husband, Bob, Carol married John Koenig. Together twelve years, they enjoyed dancing and traveling, as well as being with their families. Carol was a member of Mensa, an accomplished watercolorist, and a great believer in the transformative power of education. She is survived by her children, Jean (Larry) Guzzetta Winklehake, Catherine (Jack) Martin, and Robert (Sean) Savage Jr.; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and her brother, Wayne Hayward.
