Barbara Joyce Hurley Mackey, 88, of Fort Smith passed away on Saturday, April 29, 2023. She was born on June 14, 1934 in Fort Smith to the late Harold and Alma (Reather) Hurley. She and her husband Charles “Chuck” were married on May 9, 1953 at St. Boniface Catholic Church. They were always together until his passing in 1992. He was the love of her life. Barbara was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School and went on to be a 1952 graduate of St. Anne’s Academy in Fort Smith.
Barbara and Chuck lived in California for many years but sold their business and returned home to Fort Smith in 1978. Barbara later retired from Midwest Upholstery Supply. She liked being busy and was always working in her yard, spending time with family, and attending the Adoration Chapel with her sister Angyln. Barbara loved her family life. She was involved with her grandkids and great grandkids and was a central figure in many family traditions. For many years, during both Thanksgiving and Christmas, she was involved in gathering all the family and extended family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and family friends to celebrate the holidays. Also, she enjoyed the regular family birthday gatherings at Pizza Parlor.
In addition to her parents, Barbara is preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Mackey, Sr.; three sisters, Doris Evans, Celestine Hoedl and Angyln Berdan and her brother, Harold J. “Bill” Hurley, Jr.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Lou Mackey Magallanes and her husband Henry, of Carlsbad, CA; two sons, Charles A. Mackey, Jr. and his wife Stephanie, of Fort Smith, and Darrin L. Mackey and his wife Karen, of Centerton; seven grandchildren, John Mackey, Eric Mackey, Jessica Mackey Fenwick, Paul Minnick III, Meghan Magallanes Dupriest, David Mackey and Erin Mackey Baggett, along with fourteen great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 6:00pm Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rosary Service to immediate follow at 6:00pm.
Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, May 4, 2023 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at 10:30am, with burial to follow at 12:00pm at the Fort Smith National Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
Pallbearers will be John Mackey, Eric Mackey and David Mackey, Paul Minnick III, Robert Fenwick, Chase Baggett, and Bryce Dupriest.
