Kevin was predeceased by his father Ernie Scheer.
He is survived by his mother Doreen Scheer; his children Mitchell and Maya and their mother Cindy; brother Dale (Colleen) and many in-laws, nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Before dementia, Kevin was fun loving and spirited. He was an amazing cook and a generous host. He was a gardener, a bowler and a golfer. He loved music and shared this love with his kids, encouraging their practice and participating in their music lessons. He was a proud and loving father. Some of his favourite times were our family camping trips.
Kevin physically left us this week but dementia took him away from us years ago. It crept in and destroyed a career, shattered friendships and forever changed our family. Sometimes when we don't know the reason for behaviour, we blame the person and not the disease. Only in hindsight do we understand. By then it is too late. The damage is done.
We are thankful for the care and support of numerous healthcare workers through the years. Special love and appreciation for the caring staff at Echo Lodge Fort Qu'Appelle who were so gracious and kind especially in Kevin's final days. Prior to Echo Lodge, the Pioneer Village Dementia ward provided a safe home for Kevin and he enjoyed special events and outings.
Thank you to friends and family for their care and support while we navigated this difficult journey. Special thanks to Kevin's lifelong friend Todd Whiting for his dedication and for being with Kevin at his end.
A family memorial celebration will be held in the fall, Kevin's favourite season.
