Janice Smart, age 88, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Nov 14th in Ft Myers, FL. She was born Dec 19, 1932 in Toledo, Ohio to Henry and Louise (Busdiecker) Kinker. She attended DeVilbiss High school and graduated from University of Toledo. Shortly after beginning her career as an administrative assistant, she married her first husband, Allan Brogan and had 3 children. She soon began a lifelong passion of serving others as she volunteered for a variety of organizations such as United Way, Crittenton Home for Unwed Mothers, Garden Club, and the Toledo Museum of Art among others. After her second marriage to Paul Smart and subsequent move to Sanibel /Captiva she continued her volunteer work at Captiva Library, Captiva Yacht Club, and other philanthropic organizations.
While giving back through volunteer work was important to her, this desire stemmed from a root of loving people in general. She held her family and friends close to her heart and was always willing to step out and serve them or simply meet for lunch and “chit chat” as she liked to say. She loved any social interactions and enjoyed many years of playing golf, tennis and bridge. Janice also was an avid bird watcher and entertained us all with her daily report on the ospreys nesting outside her window.
In spite of her struggles with dementia in her later years, Janice never lost her joy for life and her love of family and friends. Even her caregivers had little pet names for her and, as she was for all her life, she continued to be pleasant and cheerful and had a smile for everyone.
Janice was a regular attendee at the Chapel by the Sea on Captiva and the Village Church at Shell Point, where she came to a saving knowledge of Jesus as her Savior.
Janice is survived by her children, Karen (Jack) Pok, Brad (Kerrie) Brogan, and Todd (Michele) Brogan, stepchildren Sue (David) Kienzle, Roberta (Greg) Roush, and Barb (Chris) Mages, in addition to 16 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held on Jan 21st at the Chapel by The Sea on Captiva Island.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Legacy Foundation at Shell Point, 15010 Shell Point Blvd. Fort Myers, FL 33908 for the benefit of "Connected Living."
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.kiserfh.com for the Smart family.
