Britta Margaret Hjelm Johnson of Shell Point Village in Fort Myers, Florida, died peacefully on June 20, 2020. Britta was born in Hartford, Connecticut, on June 3, 1931, the oldest of three daughters of Gustav and Martha (nee Anderson) Hjelm. She was two minutes older than her identical twin Inga and one year older than her sister Elsie. She also has a half-sister, Sandra.
Britta was a 1949 graduate of Jamestown High School in Jamestown, NY. While working at Hedberg's Bakery, Britta met this young GI with beautiful blue eyes, a dashing uniform, and in need of limpa rye bread. Britta was behind the counter. Bob got his bread and Britta got her man. Britta was married to J. Robert (Bob) Johnson for fifty-six years, from 1950 until his death in 2006. It was a match made in heaven, and that is where they now reside. They loved their Lord Jesus Christ.
Britta worked for many years in a bank and was active in churches and communities of Jamestown, NY, DuBois, PA, Manlius NY, Johnstown, PA. Hershey, PA, and Ft. Myers, FL. She lived her life as the quintessential extrovert. In the duration of an elevator ride she could befriend just about anyone, and had the gift of conversation and hospitality. Her friendliness and energy made her a wonderful hostess for countless dinners and social gatherings in her home. She was the life of the party.
She is survived by her three children: Larry (Sharon) Johnson of Sorrento, FL, Sandra (Jim) Tuck of Johnstown, PA, and Jeffrey (Margot) Johnson of Monson, MA. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Britta leaves behind her three sisters, Inga (Bill) Black of Mt. Vernon, OH, Elsie (Duane) Swan of Lakewood, NY, and Sandra Brown and her husband Peter of Avon, CT.
Britta will be greatly missed by her beloved family and friends. We feel tremendously blessed by her loving heart, joyous laughter, and sweet smile. We love you and will miss you, Mom, Grandma, and Gigi.
