Sandra Kay Collins Johnson, 65, succumbed at her Pompano Beach home after a valiant 10 year battle with Cervical, breast and lung cancers. Sandy was born in East Liverpool, Ohio, in 1947 and attended nursing school there. She also attended Kent State University and the University of Pennsylvania. From 1971 to 1975, she was a head nurse at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where she worked with C. Everett Koop, M.D., former Surgeon General of the United States. She also lectured at Jefferson Medical School on Quality Assurance. She relocated to Fort Lauderdale's Holy Cross Hospital in 1992 with her loving husband Billy, whom she met and married in Philadelphia.
Sandy was Director of Risk and Insurance Services at Broward Health, supervising 4 hospitals and 44 other medical facilities.
Sandy was the recipient of numerous awards for outstanding contributions to health care risk management. She chaired the Pompano Beach Relay for Life. She was listed among the 2,000 Notable American Women and also received an Honored Member Award from Who's Who in U.S. Executives. She served on the Board of the American Society of Health Care Risk Managers. She served on the Florida Society for Health Care Risk Management and Patient Safety Board of Directors as President.
Sandy and Bill were avid boaters and spent 30 happy years cruising the Chesapeake, Caribbean and local Florida Waters, including the Keys, where Sandy loved to fish for Yellowtails.
Sandy was preceded in death by her step-son, William (BJ) Johnson, III, her parents Glenn and Wilma Collins, her brother Billy Collins, and her two beloved dogs, Tinker and Sophie.
She is survived by her husband Billy, her sister, Linda Richards, and her brothers, Glenn, Randy and Mark Collins, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call at Broward Burial and Cremation Center (formerly American Burial & Cremation at Jennings Funeral Home) from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Sunday, April 14, 2013 , 1801 East Oakland Park Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33306. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m.
Sandy was an accomplished and busy person but one who always had time for others, especially counseling cancer patients, who often came to her for advice. She will be sorely missed by her family, co-workers and her many friends, especially those in the "hood".
