Orville P. Brink, age 99, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on November 28, 2018. He is survived by his loving wife, Marie Brink; his devoted daughter, Rebecca Brink of Durham, North Carolina and his nephew, Roy Brink of Houston, Texas. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas on November 26, 1919, he left there in September, 1940 when his unit, the 154th Observation Squardron, Arkansas Air National Guard, was called to federal service. Following his release from active duty, he moved to West Palm Beach, where he became active in the First Baptist Church and the community.
He moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1962 where he became Owner/President of the Terminix Company. He retired in 1984. Soon after arriving here, he joined his beloved First Baptist Church where he remained active in many phases of church life; active in a Bible class and served as Deacon Emeritus. Additionally, for many years he taught a Bible class at Independence Hall Retirement Home in Wilton Manors. He would say that “teaching God’s Word was his greatest joy.”
In 1980, he chaired the Steering Committee of the Superintendent’s Commission on Public education or “SCOPE.” The Commission conducted an intensive study of the schools and made recommendations for improvement. The outstanding work of SCOPE produced over 100 major recommendations which were officially adopted by the School Board. Later, Mr. Brink was nominated to President Ronald Reagan to receive the President’s Volunteer Action Award as an outstanding example of community cooperation and support of the school system.
He further served the community as a Vice President of the Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Chamber’s Education Task Force and Chairman of the annually observed “Free Enterprise Day” program which highlighted cooperation between the business and professional community and Broward County Schools.
For many years, Mr. Brink served on the board of John Knox Village, a retirement community in Pompano Beach. He chaired the Health Care Committee, giving many hours of his time to this activity. Further, he served for nine years on the Venetian Condominium board of governors and president of its board. His leadership skills were also reflected when he served as president of the Plantation Civitan Club, Governor of the Florida District and president of Civitan International.
He earned a private pilot’s license while in college and enjoyed over 40 years of flying. Motor homing with his family was also an important part of his life.
Mr. Brink’s full and happy life was highlighted by a devoted service to God, his family, his church, community and country. He gave unselfishly of his time, talents and treasure and was recognized as an encourager to others.
As a faithful man of God, his presence will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
