She grew up in Lindsted, Jamaica and then moved to Kingston where she became a seamstress and homemaker. Her love for sewing and making clothes followed her throughout her many years. Minel was blessed to have five children; Millicent (Babs), Winifred, Michael, Glendon, and Aniece (Mitzie).
In 1969, Minel migrated to the United States where she resided in Bronx, New York. Her tenacity and determination allowed her to continue her work as a seamstress. Eventually, she was able to open her home to her children and many others on their own journey to the United States. Minel worked for many years at Split Rock Nursing Home in the Bronx until she retired in 1989. She always remembered those years at Split Rock with a smile and spoke of her accomplishments and the many lasting friendships, many of which she maintained until she passed.
Upon retirement, Minel moved to Miami, Florida and later settled in Fort Lauderdale, Florida living with her son Michael his wife Winsome, and then her daughter Aniece throughout the years. Minel - or Grandma as everyone called her - had many talents. Her favorite pass-times were gardening and cooking to feed a crowd – and boy was she good at both. She treasured staying in touch with everyone no matter which state or country they were in. She loved her grand and great-grandchildren and took pleasure in slipping them a few dollars here and there when no-one else was watching. Her kind, loving spirit, and endearing generosity remained as she started family traditions and continued helping whoever was in need.
In October 2017, Minel suffered a stroke. She never fully recovered. On June 5, 2019, Minel passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones.
Minel was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Gwendolyn, Olga, Nerissa, and brothers Miguel and Berty. She is survived by her sister Raphaleta, sons Michael and Glendon, daughters Babs, Winifred and Aniece as well as many ‘favorite’ grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins and various other family members and friends. Her smile, her heart, her humor, and her kind, endearing spirit will truly be missed.
We love you Minel!
