Jay was born on October 18, 1949, in Needham, Massachusetts to William “Bill” and Dorothy (Waugh) Wilson. He and his 3 siblings grew up in Miami, FL where they attended Visitation Catholic School. Jay graduated from Miami Norland Senior High School in 1967. While attending Norland, Jay stood out as an exceptional athlete, playing both baseball and football. He was recognized as an All-State, All-City, All-Region, All-Gold Coast two-way tackle and helped lead the football team to win the Gold Coast Conference his senior year. Jay went on to receive a scholarship to attend and play football at the University of Miami.
Jay played on the offensive line at the University of Miami from 1968-71. He received his Bachelors of Business Administration in 1972. Jay was also in the Army ROTC Program and a brother of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
Jay began his career with Southern Bell as a sales representative. He worked in telecommunications for over 35 years at Southern Bell and then AT&T, selling both long distance and mobile services. It was at Southern Bell that he met Joan (Hyde) Wilson, his wife of 36 years. Jay and Joan were a great example of marriage and friendship for everyone around them.
Jay was a devoted husband and loving father, brother, uncle, godfather, cousin, and friend. He loved listening to classic rock, spending time with his children and grand-children and attending University of Miami football games. GO C-A-N-E-S!
Jay is preceded in death by his parents and his wife Joan. He is survived by his sons Jim (daughter-in-law, Maggie, grand-daughters Clare Joan, Brynn Ann, and Eve Gail) and Bill (daughter-in-law Molly), and his daughter Cathy. He also leaves behind his dear siblings David Wilson (Shirley), Steve Wilson (Irene), and Mary Huff (John).
The Wilson family extends their gratitude to the doctors and support staff at the University of Miami ALS Center. The family would also like to thank his dedicated caregivers from the past several years and the doctors and staff of VITAS Hospice Care for their kind attention to Jay. Finally, Jim, Bill and Cathy want to thank Jay’s friends and family for their visits, phone calls, Friday night dinners, and expressions of love shown to Dad over the last few years.
