“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”
-John 14:1-3
Celebration of Life for
James R. Teague, Jr.
On June 8, 2019 at 8:32 pm James R. Teague, Jr. was called home to be with the Lord. He was surrounded by his wife Tina, daughter Brandi and a few family friends after a battle with brain cancer.
James was born in Lexington, TN on July 14, 1964 to the late James (Sr.) and Seldon Teague. He was affectionately known as “Junior” to family. James spent his youth in Paducah, KY where he was very active in family activities and the church. At an early age, James enjoyed sports and was a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan. James is a graduate of Paducah Tilghman High School (class of 1982) where he was an outstanding basketball player earning many accolades and awards. Later in life, James earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Economics from Chicago State University and a MBA from University of Phoenix. James recently became a professor at Broward Community College (North Campus); that was one of the highlights of his life and a passion to teach at college level.
On a bright sunny Sunday afternoon while living in Dallas, TX James locked eyes with Tina White in a park. He later discovered that they both worked at the same company, Fidelity Investments in Los Colinas, TX. Their relationship began, blossomed, and were joyously married on May 7, 1988 at the Dallas West Church of Christ by the late Minister Reginald Dulin, Sr. James and Tina enjoyed 31 year of marriage, and from their union, were blessed with two children; James “Brandon” Teague and Brandi Zhanae’ Teague. James was active in volunteering in Brandon and Brandi’s classrooms. He encouraged his children every step of the way, to always do your best and have a faithful Christian walk. James’ love for sports spilled over into his children. He attended all of their track meets and basketball games. James was an assistant coach for the South Florida Lady Jaguars basketball team where Brandi played travel basketball. There he developed deep relationships with other parents and coaches.
James was a member of the Pembroke Park Church of Christ (PPCC), along with his wife and daughter. James was faithful and very active in the church. While at PPCC, he served on the Health Ministry, the men’s ministry, and the CARES Ministry (where he delivered communion to the sick and shut-in members of PPCC). In addition, James traveled annually with the men of PPCC to the Brotherhood of Men Conference in Dallas, TX.
James was also a Deacon at the West Broward Church of Christ in Plantation, FL. There he served as the Deacon of Education. James and his wife were also members at the Shelton Heights Church of Christ in Chicago, IL. At both congregations, he regularly taught Sunday School Bible classes.
James was a committed member of the Zeta Chi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Incorporated in Fort Lauderdale, FL. He crossed into this illustrious brotherhood on July 7, 2001. James was very active in his chapter where he served in several leadership positions. He used this platform to invest in the community, and advocate for the less fortunate.
Among his many accomplishments, he was dedicated to giving back to young black boys. He was a mentor at Banyan Elementary in Sunrise, FL and MLK Elementary in Fort Lauderdale. James also served on the Citizen’s Police Board in Ft Lauderdale.
James’ most recent position was Office Manager at Tina Teague Insurance Agency, Inc., DBA State Farm agent. In addition, James worked as a Financial Service Associate (FSA) with State Farm Insurance Company in Coral Springs, FL. He also held several managerial positions at Charles Schwab (Orlando and Plantation) and Fidelity Investments (Dallas and Chicago).
In honor of his courageous and final fight, the City of Fort Lauderdale granted James with a Proclamation signed by the mayor on May 21, 2019, but presented to his wife on June 4, 2019. This Proclamation was witnessed by his wife, a host of friends, and fraternity brothers. Nationally, May is recognized as “Brain Tumor Awareness Month” and “Go Gray in May.” Supporters were asked to wear gray at the Proclamation.
To cherish his memories, James leaves his loving and faithful wife Tina Teague; his son, James Brandon Teague; his daughter, Brandi Zhanae’ Teague; his two older siblings, Thaddeus Teague (Debbie) and Domestra Hawkins (Samuel), a host of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins, brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated, and very close friends.
