Audrey, affectionately known as Maria, was born in Kingston, Jamaica on May 5th, 1949 to Lawrence Owen and Ida Steele (nee Cyrus). She spent a part of her childhood in London, England and in Kingston , Jamaica where she attended Gainstead High School. In 1968, Maria migrated to the United States and lived in Brooklyn, New York. She attended college in Brooklyn where she studied Business Administration and later on pursued a course in theological education. Maria worked as a personal administrative assistant at Resorts International for over 30 years. She also worked as a Mary Kay Consultant for many years until she retired from both jobs due to becoming ill.
Maria (Sister Owen to her church family), was a faithful servant of God at Liberty Hall Cathedral of Praise, formerly known as Liberty Hall Church of God, located at 1387 East 96th Street, Brooklyn, New York. She had been with the church from the beginning of its foundation in 1980, and remained a devoted member until she relocated to Florida approximately 4 and a ½ years ago. Sister Owen embraced many roles in the church such as; Evangelist, Choir Director, Sunday School Teacher, Youth Counselor and Minister. She was also known as an outstanding prayer warrior. She touched the lives of so many and would always go out of her way to help others.
Because of her illness, Maria was moved to Port St Lucie, Florida so she could be cared for by family. Despite her illness, she maintained a special relationship with God and began attending the Worship Center PSL International Ministry in Port St. Lucie where she gained yet another church family. Towards the end of her life, Maria had very few lucid moments, but on every one of those occasions, she turned to her bible, prayed and affirmed her faith in God .
Maria is survived by sisters; Lana and Karon, brothers; Raymond and Jerome, as well as nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence Owen and Ida Steele and her sister Fay Steele. She has also left behind a loving church family from Liberty Hall Cathedral of Praise and the Worship Center PSL International Ministry.
Maria loved, and was loved in return by her family and friends and she lived a vibrant life right up to her debilitating illness. Her family and friends know that she has made the transition to her father’s arms.
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord; and may Your perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Liberty Hall Cathedral of Praise for an Educational scholarship to be named in honor of Audrey Maria Owen.
