Marge was born on June 3, 1934 in Berwyn, Illinois to Floyd and Martha Bergland. Her younger brother Robert (Bob), who she adored, completed the Berwyn Bergland family.
Marge married Arthur Raymond (Ray) Abbott, who preceded her in death. They also lived in Berwyn for many years and raised two adopted children, Allison and Raymond Abbott. Although Marge and Ray divorced, in their later years they were close and would spend holidays together with their children and grandchildren.
When Marge was younger, she worked at the phone company where she rose to the level of supervisor. She stopped working when her daughter was born. When her children were in high school, she took a job at J.C. Penney’s in North Riverside and worked there for many years until she retired. She loved J.C. Penney’s and most of her gifts, which she loved to give, were of course from there!
Marge had a passion for many things. She loved to garden, travel, meet her friends for lunch, and help other people. She volunteered for BEDS for many years, and was actively involved with her churches, when she was younger Warren Park Presbyterian Church in Cicero and in her adult life Riverside Presbyterian Church. She was an animal lover and was proud to call herself the crazy cat lady. She also was an avid Ides of March fan, for which her brother Bob was one of the founding members. She most of all loved spending time with her grandchildren, Addy and Kali Moran, children of daughter Allison and son-in-law John Moran.
Marge was preceded in death by her parents Floyd and Martha, her ex-husband Ray, and her sister-in-law Norma. She will lovingly be remembered by her children Allison and Raymond, Allison’s husband John and their daughters Addy and Kali, her brother Bob and his son Chris and Chris’ lovely wife Lindsay.
Marge was buried, close to her parents, at Woodlawn in a private family ceremony. The family is planning a “Celebration of Life” ceremony that will take place, by invitation only, later this fall. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.woodlawnchicago.com, and donations to CatNap from the Heart of La Grange Park IL.
