My father Edward, my wife Nicole and I, David Fischer bid a tearful farewell to the most-kindest, sweetest and most-devoted Daughter, Wife and Mother: Myra Fischer. My mother was a child of World War II. Like thousands of the Jewish faith, born in early to mid-1930's had to suffer through their early lives under Nazi occupation. In her case the location was Warsaw, Poland where she was born on the first day of winter, December 21, 1935. Like myself she was an only child. I think perhaps it may have lead to bond that would never waiver.
Her mother, Helen Steinlauf, having dual-citizenship, at age 31 preserved the through a series of highly-traumatic events which by 1944 found them in Vital France. Some time later, Myra, her father Eric and mother Helen were on the steam ship MS Gripsholm bound for New York City (as part of a Nazi-American Citizenship exchange) to meet up with their relatives in Coney Island. Through the Lord's guidance they made this perilous journey admit the mined seas without incident.
She had good life here in America. After a number of years in Brighton Beach, they moved to Forest HIlls, bought a 1956 Pontiac and continues to live the "American Dream." My mother chose to stop her training at the Juilliard School of Music and continues to pursue her French literary studies at New York University. She was very successfully at Double Day publishing house. One parentally-created blind data would lead to Myra meeting a rather clean-cut gent wearing a Basque Berét, whom amongst other things spoke French, designed machines and like her a child of the war.
Some several months later, an engaged was announced which lead to just over a 60 year marriage with one offspring. Myra chose to quit Doubleday to be a homemaker and a caring mother and great wife. It is now that I approach middle age how I see just how lucky I am to have two great parents who who much they worked as team. They were only separated on 2 just occasions when my father had business trips In Europe during the 1970's. My mother was always deeply committed to my father as he was to her. As they approached their dotage this devotion was unstoppable.
The onset of Alzheimer's and then Dementia lead to her passing on this past Saturday, June 15, 2026. Myra was of 88. That day, like every other day, she dined well on home cooked meals. Not too long after lunch she quietly slipped away. No pain and in the company of persons who cared deeply for her and my father.
My father, Edward can console himself in knowing Myra is in a better place. Born, in Antwerp Belgium, on the last day of the year in 1934, Edward is fighter. He will survive in the same place my parent's called home for some 58 years in the company of two great live-in aides and long visits with me surrounded by photos and movies of his dear wife and their life they had together.
If you wish, please purchase a tree in Israel (through the Jewish National Fund of USA) in memory of my dear Mother "Myra Fischer né Steinlauf" at this website is: https://rb.gy/ak4wfr
