Joan Rita Person

Joan was born in Far Rockaway, Queens, on April 25, 1934. Joan was married to Sam Person for 64 years before his death in 2017. She was the cherished mother of Larry and Louis Person, adored grandmother of Sera, Riley and Darin Person and caring mother-in-law to Lisa Person and Brian Stein. Joan was a beloved aunt to 3 generations of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. Joan is also survived by her sister Barbara Butler and was predeceased by her parents, Lillian and Nathan Faber, and siblings Stanford Faber, Rosalie Beal and Martin Faber. She spent her life volunteering for Jewish and other causes and is remembered by the many students she helped prepare for their bar/bat mitzvah. As an adult in her 50s, Joan returned to college and received her bachelor’s degree from Adelphi University. She is renowned for her lace cookies, her meringue cookies and of course, her legendary bagelettes. She resided in Neponsit, spending time at the family business, Faber’s Fascination, in Coney Island. She moved to Brooklyn when she and Sam first got married. Joan raised her family in Suffolk County, Long Island, before she and Sam became snowbirds, splitting time between New Jersey and Florida. Most recently, Joan resided in a community in Boca Raton, Florida, where she was quickly identified by staff and residents for her friendly and caring nature and was appointed as an ambassador for new residents.

A chapel service for Joan will be held Friday, January 12, 2024 at 11:30 AM at Schwartz Brothers-Jeffer Memorial Chapels, 114-03 Queens Boulevard, Forest Hills, NY 11375. Following the chapel service will be an interment at Montefiore Cemetery, 121-83 Springfield Boulevard, Springfield Gardens, NY 11413.
