Carlos Manuel Alvarez, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2023, at NYU Langone Health, at the age of 89. He was born on October 28, 1933, in Havana, Cuba.
Carlos immigrated to the United States in the late 1950s and met his wife, Elsa. They built a full, loving life together with their two children Carlos and Amalia in Washington Heights, NY.
Carlos was proud of his career as a waiter and later as a banquet waiter at the New York Sheraton, where he spent over three decades serving guests with pride and dedication. He was known for his exceptional customer service and his warm, friendly demeanor.
Carlos was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Elsa Alvarez, with whom he shared 62 years of marriage. He was a loving father to his daughter, Amalia Horton, and a proud grandfather to his granddaughter, Rebecca Horton, and grandson-in-law, Zack Perskin. He was also a father figure to his nephew, Jose Marquez-Leon. Carlos had a big heart and was also a father figure to Carol Cueba-Jones and called her daughter Darol his granddaughter. Together many beach vacations were enjoyed. Carlos was preceded in death by his son, Carlos Manuel Alvarez.
Carlos was the epitome of a gentleman…always showing kindness and integrity. He was dedicated to his work and his family, a true example of a life well lived. He was a generous person who touched the lives of everyone he met. He loved telling stories, laughing with his friends and family and enjoying good, piping hot food. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff at NYU Langone Health for their loving, gentle care during Carlos's final days. Their thoughtfulness and support were greatly appreciated.
A funeral service will be held for Carlos on Saturday, May 6th, 2:00 – 6:00pm at Forest Park Funeral Home, 114-03 Queens Blvd, Forest Hills, NY 11375.
