Beloved wife of the late Vincent DiLello. Loving mother of Nicholas (Maureen) DiLello, Edward V. Dilello and the late Paul DiLello.Cherished grandmother of Thomas (Jennifer) DiLello, Nicole (Timothy) Heidel, Chiara Di Lello, Daria (Mia Harkins) Di Lello. Adored great grandmother of Nicholas DiLello, Jonathan DiLello, Elizabeth Heidel and Anna Heidel.
Whether you called her Angie, Mom, Grandma, Nonna or "Grandma Mooch" you knew her by her warm smile, her gentleness, her generosity and her occasional mischievous wit. Her friends, neighbors, co-workers and family knew that they were always welcome in her home and at her table. Her father Angelo Salvatore was a respected chef in Manhattan restaurants; his daughter Angelina inherited his talent and remembered and used his recipes. Her classic Italian dishes (including handmade maccheroni con uova) were second to none.
She graduated from Newtown High School in 1941 as an honor student and wanted to go to college, but had to go to work instead, to help support her family. She worked as a seamstress in Manhattan's garment district. During WWII her shop made US Army WAC dress uniforms. The pay was so good she was soon out earning her dad.
She met Vincent in 1946, and after a courtship that lasted two years, they married in 1948. She raised three sons and returned to the workforce in 1970, as a saleslady at Bloomingdale's Department Store in Manhattan. She loved her job and fondly referred to the store as "Bloomie's." She made many close friends in her years at the store, and management valued her, placing her on their "flying squad." She was known to comment proudly: "We're the flyers. We can sell any merchandise in any department in this store, on any day of the week."
She was, at different times, a proud member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union and the United Store Workers.
Throughout her life, she distinguished herself as an exceptionally caring person. Over the years, whenever illness struck in her family, she was the one who stepped up. She aided and cared for her parents, who both suffered from diabetes, her brother Sebastian, who was crippled by ALS, her husband Vincent during his last years with Alzheimer's, and her son Paul who was taken at the young age of 28 by cancer. At those times when her loved ones needed help, she gave it cheerfully, tirelessly and warmly.
