Thom served his country by enlisting in the Coast Guard at a young age, where he served during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he moved with his mother to Palatka, Florida, and worked at Georgia-Pacific in management.
Thom was active in St. Monica’s Catholic Church in Palatka and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bunnell. He served God and community in various ways, including Boy Scout leadership, choir and as a Eucharistic minister. Through his many years of work with the Kairos Prison Ministry, he received the Volunteer of the Year Award from Putnam Correctional Institution. He also volunteered at Raiford and Tomoka prisons. He has long been active in the Knights of Columbus where he served in various offices, including three terms as Grand Knight. He became a member of the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites through his association with the Saint Joseph Carmelite Monastery in Bunnell. He also loved being outdoors, fishing, camping with the Boy Scouts, and golfing.
He is survived by his wife, Enza, and two sisters: Katherine Korkus of Worcester, Massachusetts, and Mildred Harned of Renton, Washington, and their families, as well as his stepchildren and their families.
A church visitation for Thomas will be held Thursday, June 8, 2023 from 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 230 South Old Dixie Highway, Bunnell, FL 32110. A rosary service will occur at 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral mass at 11:30 AM all at the church.
Interment with Military Honors will be held on Monday, June 12, 2023; 9:30 AM at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery
