Born in Charleston, WV, he was the son of Dale and Marilyn Payne of Fayetteville, WV.
He was a graduate of Fayetteville High School, Marshall University, WV State Police Academy and numerous Accident Reconstruction schools.
Chris proudly served his country in the US Army -Artillery Division, was a WV State Police Trooper (Retired), a Driving Testing Examiner for WV State Police and was a Regional Supervisor/Part-Time Cowboy for Cramer Security.
He enjoyed horses and was a two-time World Champion with AQHA Horse Showing, WV State Fair Champion, WVQHA Champion. He was also the founder of Southern WV Coyote Hunters competition teams and was an avid turkey hunter and trout fisherman.
Chris attended Grace Baptist Church, Fayetteville, WV.
Chris had a sense of humor that was unmatchable and there was nothing he wouldn’t do to make a person laugh. He loved life, adventures, horseshows, traveling and just being with his love of 30 years, Kathy. His greatest pleasure was spending time as “GrumpPa” to his pride and joy, Charlie Love.
He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Med Raybert and Mary Catherine Payne; maternal grandparents, Edmond Pierce and Lillian Fields; uncle and aunt, Med Payne, Jr. and Juanita Payne; uncle, Larry Fields; mother-in-law, Rena Sue Lewis; and brother, Leslie W. Payne.
Left with broken hearts and cherished memories are his loving wife, Kathy Lewis-Payne of Fayetteville, WV; his son, Charles Lewis (Heather) Elkins of Johnson City, TN; parents, Dale and Marilyn Payne of Fayetteville, WV; his adored granddaughter, Charlie Love Elkins of Johnson City, TN; uncle, David Fields of Cullman, AL; aunt, Nita Wilson of Burlington, NC; along with numerous cousins, relatives and friends.
Services to celebrate the life of Christopher B. Payne will be 3:00 P.M. Thursday, December 19, 2024 at Grace Baptist Church 70 Kaymoor Bottom Road, Fayetteville, WV with Pastor Jim Mitchell officiating. Friends are welcome two hours prior to services at the church. He will be laid to rest with military honors in Huse Memorial Park Mausoleum.
