Obituary of William R. Pollock

IN THE CARE OF

Murphy Funeral Homes

William R. Pollock passed away peacefully at home on June, 17th. He was 94 years old. The son of John Paul Pollock and Anna Zelinek Pollock, he was born on December 16, 1927 in Marianna, PA. He enlisted in the US Army shortly after graduating from high school. He served in the Army from 1946 to 1968, rising to the rank of Sergeant First Class and receiving the Army Commendation Medal for "exceptionally meritorious service" which "reflect(s) great credit on him and the United States Army." While stationed in France with the Army as a medical records specialist, Bill Pollock met and married Capt. Jane Devlin, a nurse in a maternity unit there. They married on October 9, 1954 in La Jarne, France. She predeceased him in 1995 after 41 years of marriage. Four days after retiring from the Army in 1968, Bill began working at the IRS as a facilities manager. Before his retirement he was recognized with an Assistant Commissioner’s Award for his work in the National Office and was endowed with the “honored title ‘Mr. Property.’ “ He retired from this second career in 1989. The Pollocks moved into what was then a relatively new development in Falls Church in 1967. They were an integral part of the Churchill neighborhood, which experienced rapid changes in composition over the years. Bill is remembered by all his neighbors as a kind, caring man, always happy to lend a hand if needed. He loved animals, and all the dogs in the neighborhood knew him by sight. If one somehow got loose, it was a good bet it could be found at Bill's house. An avid gardener, he generously shared what he grew with his neighbors. Bill remained very close to his Pennsylvania roots, taking yearly trips to the Outer Banks with his relatives, where they enjoyed deep-sea fishing, eating, playing Phase 10, and in general acting like kids on spring break! He is survived by his two children, William R. Pollock Jr. and Gabriele C. Pollock, both of Falls Church, VA and sisters Mary Ann Pollock Wolfe and Barbara Pollock Armenini, both of Washington PA. Bill was a long-time member of St. James RC Parish in Falls Church; the Arlington VA Knights of Columbus; and American Legion Post 130 Visitation will be held at Murphy’s Funeral Home, Falls Church on Sunday, June 26th from 1PM to 5PM.
