HAMMOND, William (Bill) Carroll, 89, a resident of Centerville, Virginia since 2000, passed away peacefully with his children by his side on Sunday May 28, 2017 at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia after suffering several significant strokes. Prior to being admitted on May 12, 2017, he had been healthy and mentally engaged with his family and neighbors. Bill is remembered as being a friendly and helpful person and was loved by all who knew him.
Mr. Hammond was born to Lucille Averdell Johns and Claude Nelson Hammond in Brunswick, Georgia on March 4, 1928. He was the brother of Claude Nelson Hammond, Jr. who preceded him in death in 1947. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marianne Helga Hammond of Alexandria, Virginia; their daughter, Mrs. Barbara Ann Hammond (Mr. Robert Wingard) of Annapolis, Maryland and their son, Mr. Andrew Sean Hammond (Ms. Julie Truong) of Centerville, Virginia; and by his half-brother George William Hammond of Richmond Hill, Georgia.
Mr. Hammond retired from the U.S. Army at Fort Belvoir, Virginia in 1983; his specialty was topographic engineering. He received numerous medals during his career including Good Conduct Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Bronze Star Medal, and Meritorious Service Medal (2nd Oak Leaf Cluster). Before enlisting in the Army, he was a Naval Reservist from 1946-1951 while simultaneously working for the railroad as had his father and grandfather.
Mr. Hammond was a descendant of Phillip Hamman who was a Private in the 12th VA Regiment during the Revolutionary War as well as a descendant of Malekiah Johns who was a Private in the 5th GA Cavalry, Company G (Liberty County) during the Civil War.
Graveside service for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at 2:00pm at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to any non-profit organizations supporting our Armed Forces.
