Murphy Funeral Homes
Dr. William David Dwyer (Bill), of Falls Church, Virginia, passed away on November 22, 2023. Bill was born in Trenton, New Jersey on April 15, 1939 to John and Helen Dwyer and was raised in Elizabeth, New Jersey, with three brothers and a sister. Bill studied at the University of Pennsylvania where he was a letterman goalie for the university soccer team. An ROTC member at Penn, he then served four years in the United States Navy. While stationed in Virginia Beach, he met the love of his life, Elizabeth, whom he married in 1966.
Bill returned to Penn to complete dental school and the couple moved their growing family back to Virginia Beach. He practiced dentistry in the Kempsville area of Virgina Beach for more than thirty years. He was past president of the Tidewater Dental Study Club, member of the Norfolk Sports Club and attended Holy Family Catholic Church.
After retiring he and Liz moved first to Delray Beach, Florida, then more recently to Northern Virginia, where Bill enjoyed spending time with his family and watching his grandchildren's soccer games. He will be fondly remembered for many things, including his encyclopedic knowledge of sports mascots, coaches, and players; many turns of phrases that still bring wry smiles to the family and his sincere pleasure for the successes of his children and grandchildren.
Bill is survived by his wife Liz, their children Bill Jr., Susan, and Robin and grandchildren Alec, Zach, Sophie, Will, Sean, Ewan and Rhys, and his brother Bob. He was preceded in death by his brothers Jack and Jim and his sister Bunny.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. James Catholic Church in Falls Church with interment at Quantico National Cemetery.
