Virginia Dorothy Thorson

November 26, 1933 – December 14, 2022

Ginny Thorson of Potomac Falls, VA passed away on December 14, 2022. She was born in Baltimore, MD to the late J. Virginia and William Speer. She graduated from Eastern High School in 1952 and the University of Maryland School of Nursing in 1955. Following graduation, she worked in Baltimore at the University of Maryland Hospital and Armco Steel.

In August 1957, she married Rodney O. Thorson and moved to Illinois where he attended law school at the University of Illinois and she worked at the Carle Clinic. In 1960, Ginny and Rod moved to the Washington, DC area and were long time residents of McLean, VA.

As her children got older, she worked in school health nursing at Spring Hill Elementary and spent the latter part of her career working at Powhatan Nursing Home serving as a supervising nurse. Ginny was active in PTA, neighborhood civic associations, St John’s Episcopal Church and Tuckahoe Recreation Club. Ginny was on the Tuckahoe Board of Directors for over 20 years and became its first female Club President in 1981. She was also involved with Bible Study Fellowship and later, Community Bible Study, where she had leadership roles.

Ginny is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Rodney. She is survived by her children Eric Thorson, Andrea Thorson Smith, and Paul Thorson, along with her brother William Speer, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Services will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at 11:00 a.m.at Saint John’s Episcopal Church, 6715 Georgetown Pike, McLean, VA, where she was an active member. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Saint John’s Church.
