Born and raised in the Bronx, New York, Surrell discovered her passion for art and music at an early age. A graduate of Music & Arts High School and City College of New York, she expressed her artistic talent through various mediums, including painting, lithography, metalwork, and ceramics. After a year of graduate studies in Art History, she began her teaching career in high school art.

In 1970, Surrell met Bertram Seidlitz on a ski trip, and they fell in love. They married in 1971 and relocated to Maryland, where she taught art at Anne Arundel High School. Embracing her role as a stepmother to Bertram’s three children—Rebecca, Neal, and Lon—she later welcomed two children of her own, Glen and Shari.

Surrell later shifted her career to residential real estate, working for HG Peck in Silver Spring, Maryland. In the mid-1980s, she transitioned again, becoming an appraiser with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Her tenure at HUD spanned over 20 years, during which she held several positions on the fair housing team.

Throughout her life, Surrell was actively involved with Hadassah, particularly the Rockville chapter, where she served in various roles, including President. She volunteered as a docent at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., and enjoyed knitting at WoolWinders, a passion she maintained until the very end.

Surrell's vibrant spirit and artistic legacy will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Born on Sunday, April 12, 1942, and passing away on Saturday, October 5, 2024, in Bronx, New York, Surrell was the eldest daughter of Anna and Charles Weintrub. She is survived by her sister, Sylvia Zuckerman (nee Weintrub), and her brother, Gary Zuckerman. Surrell was the beloved wife of Eugene Silverman and the late Bertram Seidlitz. She was a devoted mother to her son, Glen Seidlitz and his wife Alison, and her daughter, Shari McCandlish, and her partner, Fairfax IV. Surrell was also a cherished grandmother to Lida Seidlitz, Maisie Seidlitz, Juliette McCandlish, Tess McCandlish, and Kinsey McCandlish. Additionally, she was a loving stepmother to Rebecca Seidlitz, Neal Seidlitz, Lon Seidlitz, Forrest Silverman, Jennie Silverman, and Shawn Silverman, as well as a step-grandmother to Courtney, Max, Dylan, Tyler, Jessica, Carly, Travis, Anna, Trystan, Autumn, Freya, Sophia, and Lucy.

In a garden where the sun still shines,
Where whispers of love and laughter twine,
You held my hand with gentle grace,
Though time had stolen your familiar face.
Though distance marked the years we shared,
Your warmth and kindness always cared.
You spun the tales of family lore,
Of roots and stories, love at the core.

Your light grew dim, and my heart learned,

In the depths of silence, your love would swell.
A memory lost, a name unspoken,
Yet in my heart, the bond unbroken.
I’ll carry your laughter, your spirit so free,
In every soft breeze, in the tall oak tree.
Though we weren’t truly close, I felt your embrace,
In every family gathering, your loving trace.
So here’s to you, dear Grandma of mine,
