Obituary of Pradip Kumar Swain MD
Dr. Pradip K. Swain, MD (82) passed away on May 21, 2024. Dr. Swain was born in Bhadrak, Orissa, India, on September 15, 1941. He married the love of his life Asha L. Swain, MD, on February 20, 1976. His determination to provide for his family led him to America in 1976 where he lived by his values of perseverance, commitment, and service in the Hollidaysburg-Altoona area of Pennsylvania. For 35 years, he served the community as the Chief Emergency Trauma Surgeon and President of the Medical Staff at Bon Secours Hospital, giving to a community that he said gave so much to him. He promoted health, safety, and healing through teaching at local colleges, speaking engagements, and writing columns in the Altoona Mirror and other prominent publications. While in America, he never forgot his homeland and family. He co-founded Kalinga Hospital in Orissa, India, the first of its kind in Bhubaneswar, the state capital. Outside work, he loved music, gardening, soccer, and the Pittsburgh Steelers. After 35 years in Hollidaysburg, Drs. Swain moved to Falls Church, Virginia, to live near their children and grandchildren. In 2007, Dr. Swain was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and later with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, a battle he fought head-on for over 15 years. He demonstrated his perseverance until he drew his very last breath and never allowed these diseases to take his spirit – he died peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones. He is survived by his devoted wife, Asha, and his three children, Tooshar Swain of Arlington, VA (Christine), Devjanee Swain Lenz, PhD, of Durham, NC (Fabian Lenz), and Joyprada Swain Baker of Falls Church, VA (John). His life’s legacy is best embodied through his six grandchildren: Ellora & Avani (Tooshar), Anjali & Anika (Devjanee), Samaira & Ashwin (Joyprada). His family and loved ones will celebrate Dr. Swain’s life on Friday, May 31, 2024, at 10:00 am at the National Funeral Home 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA 22042. In lieu of flowers, the Swain family requests memorial donations be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation of the National Capital Area.
