Obituary of Patricia Anne Norton

IN THE CARE OF

Murphy Funeral Homes

Patricia Anne Norton passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on October 5, 2023, after a long battle with dementia. Born in Rutherglen, Scotland on June 27, 1944 to Henry O’Hear and Mary Doherty O’Hear, Patricia came to the United States shortly before her fourth birthday with her parents and older brother, John. Growing up in her adopted hometown of Boston, Massachusetts, she proudly attended Mount Saint Joseph’s Academy. On August 4, 1963, Patricia met the love of her life and future husband, Phillip Gerald Norton, on Cape Cod. They were married in 1966, and over the next 57 years she was the center of and guiding light for her family. Her journey spanned from Navy life to rearing three boys, and moving from San Diego, California, to Clinton, Maryland, to Richmond, Virginia, and ultimately settling in McLean, Virginia in 1976. Her greatest and most cherished role in life was being a mother to her three boys and “Nana” to her seven grandchildren. When not on the sidelines or stands of youth sporting events watching her children and grandchildren play, she was hosting gatherings and parties for family and her many wonderful friends. No moment or occasion was too small to recognize or celebrate, and her annual Christmas Eve party with visits from Santa will live on in legend. Patricia’s Catholic faith, compassion, kindness, warmth, and generosity were constants. She was a beacon of light and a pillar of strength and stability to her family and friends over her lifetime. Patricia is survived by her husband of 57 years, Phil, by her sons Phillip Gerald Norton, Jr. and his wife Michelle, Andrew Luke Norton, and Jeremiah O’Hear Norton and his wife Katherine. She will be forever remembered and loved by her seven grandchildren: Luke, Alexandra, Caroline, Norah, Catherine, P.J., and Teddy. Predeceased by her brother John, Patricia is also survived by her brother Brian O’Hear and his wife Donna, as well as her nephew and many nieces. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, October 12th, at 11:00am at the Saint Luke Catholic Church, 7001 Georgetown Pike, McLean, VA, 22101. In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made in Patricia’s memory to the Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF), through this link https://www.alzdiscovery.org/donate. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.murphy-fh.com for the Norton family.
