Karen Alexandra Hudes was born to Ira Hudes and Sylvia Helen Appel on December 20, 1948. She graduated from Northwood High School in 1966. She graduated magna cum laude from NYU with a B.A. and received her J.D. from Yale University in 1976, as well as a Masters of Philosophy in Economics from the University of Amsterdam. She married Barry Alexander Spergel in 1989.
She worked at the U.S. Export Import Bank from 1980-1985 and later as Senior Counsel for the World Bank, where she was employed for 21 years, from 1986-2007. She established the Non-Governmental Organization Committee of the International Law Section of the American Bar Association and the Committee on Multilateralism and the Accountability of International Organizations of the American Branch of the International Law Association. Her work led to publications in the U.S.A., England, France, Germany, Holland, Jordan and Yemen.
She was involved in both Beth El Synagogue of Bethesda MD and Berlin First Baptist Church of Berlin MD. During her undergraduate career she was a member of Phi Betta Kappa at NYU as well as the captain of NYU’s fencing team.
Karen Alexandra Hudes is preceded in death by her mother Sylvia Appel and father Ira Hudes.
Karen Alexandra Hudes is survived by her husband Barry Spergel, two daughters Elizabeth and Sarah Spergel, and her sisters Paula Gori and Deborah Rotter.
Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association.
The family of Karen Alexandra Hudes wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department, Tidal Health Peninsula Regional Hospital, Pastor Glenn Kurka of Berlin First Baptist Church, Coastal Hospice.
Funeral services will be held at 3 pm on October 30, 2022 at King David Memorial Cemetery, with Rabbi Jonathan Maltzman officiating. Burial will follow. Arrangements are by National Memorial Funeral Home.
