Dwight Hillis Wilson II

On September 17, 2017, Dwight Hillis Wilson, II, formerly of Alexandria, Virginia, peacefully entered into eternal rest with his Lord and Savior. At the time of his passing, he was at home with family and loved ones. Dwight, devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, was born on July 18, 1949 to the late Dwight H. Wilson, Sr. and Gheretein Wilson at Hubbard Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. Dwight grew up in the Trinidad neighborhood of Washington, DC where he frequently enjoyed biking, board games, Boy Scouts, model car assembly, model trains, stargazing, swimming, and reading. As a child and adolescent, he matriculated in District of Columbia Public Schools ultimately graduating from Eastern High School in 1968. He later attended Federal City College, now the University of the District of Columbia, from 1969 to 1970. Over the course of his career, Dwight worked for various private organizations prior to entering government service where he worked at the United States Department of Agriculture and District of Columbia Government. Subsequently, in 1987, he began working at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). During his 29-year tenure at FDIC, he earned multiple licenses, certifications, and awards climbing the ranks to become the Chief of the Transportation Unit, his position at the time of retirement. As a native Washingtonian, Dwight was an avid Redskins fan, often rooting for the team on Sunday afternoons and during Monday Night Football. Dwight. Loved. Cars. His mother once shared that, unlike most children whose first words are “mama” or “dada,” Dwight’s first word was “car.” As he grew up, he continued to develop an encyclopedic knowledge of cars and could identify the make, model, and year of a car on sight and/or sound. Dwight’s love of cars, and vintage cars in particular, made him a fixture at car shows in the District of Columbia Metropolitan area. Dwight enjoyed laughing and spending time with family and friends. He was well known for his outgoing personality allowing him to often engage in conversations with complete strangers with whom he would soon become friends. Unsurprisingly, although he was born an only child, he had close friends who he called and treated as brothers and sisters. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 34 years Donna E. Wilson; six children Andre Peterson, De’el Shorter, Nichole Gatling, Torrey Wilson, Jasmine Wilson (Holmar Filipsson), and Jessica Wilson; seven grandchildren Marquice Knight, Andre D. Peterson, Kiana Venson, Tyler Gatling, Carlos A. Rodriguez, Amelio E. Rodriguez, and Kyndal Peterson; three great grandchildren Alijah Barnett, Liana Valladares, and Sabella Knight; a father-in-law Thomas A. Edmonds, Sr.; a brother-in-law Thomas A. Edmonds, Jr.; a niece Wanda Parham-Payne (Rodney Payne, Jr.); one great nephew Rodney Payne, III; a host of cousins; and devoted friends Jonathan Alston, Honey Wade, Mickey Woody, Lula Washington, and Karen Wilbanks. Friends with whom he especially shared his love of cars included Percell Bennett, Harry Goins, and Harvey Samuels to name a few. Dwight lived a full life during which he developed many relationships that he treasured. His beaming personality attracted many friends – too many to name. So when you get in your car and turn on a song you know he would love, nod your head, think of him, and simply smile.
