Obituary of David John Scully

IN THE CARE OF

Murphy Funeral Homes

On July 29, 2023, David John Scully peacefully departed this world at the age of 90 in the warmth of his McLean, Virginia home, surrounded by his loving family. Born on February 7, 1933 in Exeter, New Hampshire, he had a life filled with love and dedication. David was married to his beloved wife, Estella, for more than 50 years, from November 21, 1958, until her passing on June 2, 2011. Survived by his daughter Anita D’Ermes, his sons Joseph Scully, Adam Scully, John Scully, Edward Scully, son in-law, John D’Ermes, daughter in-laws, Jamie, Lynn, & Andrea Scully, 15 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He loved each and every one of them so much. Frequently, he would mention each by name as he held them so near and dear to his heart. David attended the University of New Hampshire and shortly after was commissioned as an officer of the United States Air Force. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after serving honorably for 21 years. A gifted linguist, he pursued his dream of teaching languages and embarked on a 30+ year career teaching French, Spanish and Chinese, at Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria VA. Every day, David got up at 5:00, drove 40 minutes to Alexandria in time to attend daily mass, he taught with enthusiasm and engagement... he cared for the welfare of his students, and after a long day would faithfully return home for dinner and then dutifully prepare for his classes until late at night. David poured out his love, sacrifice, and devotion for his family and Catholic faith. He was a simple, humble, and a loving father, and his pursuits reflected that. He said a daily rosary from the heart for his family, friends, and neighbors. He loved and deeply cared for his brothers and sisters, and his nieces and nephews who were so dear to him. A devoted husband, he loved Estela, the only love of his life and cherished her brothers and sisters in Mexico. He devoted several hours weekly as a member of the Legion of Mary, and he enjoyed so much the company and prayers with his fellow legionnaires. David taught CCD at St. John’s the Beloved Catholic Church and St. James Catholic Church. He had a deep devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. To Edward, his youngest son, he cared and attended to him daily with deep felt love of a good father. He was and is an example to all of us. Refreshments will be served after the 11 a.m. mass and will be held at 1627 Craig Ln., McLean Virginia 22101. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.murphy-fh.com for the Scully family.
