Mr. Riley was a native of Fall River, Massachusetts, and a resident of Washington, D.C. and Westport, MA. He was the son of the late Francis J. Riley and the late Irene C. (Castonguay) Riley and the brother of the late Francis J. Riley and the late Agnes F. Torpey. He attended Sacred Heart Parish School in Fall River and Msgr. Coyle High School in Taunton, MA, served four years in the United States Air Force as a military police officer and graduated from California State University in Northridge, CA.
Richard P. Riley was a special agent with the United States Secret Service from 1969 until his retirement in 1990, serving under five chief executives, Presidents Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Reagan. He began his career in Boston and Providence investigating counterfeiting and forgery. After moving to Washington, D.C. in the 1970's, he worked on many details, including the protection of foreign dignitaries, including Pope John Paul II, Queen Elizabeth II and Fidel Castro.
In 1985, Mr. Riley was named Director of the White House Military Office and was a Deputy Assistant to President Ronald Reagan. Previous to that appointment, he served as Special Assistant to White House Chief of Staff, Donald Regan. After leaving the White House, he served as Director of Security at the U.S. Treasury Department.
Mr. Riley was a parishioner at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Westport, MA and the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington, DC. Mr. Riley was a member of the Association of Former Agents of the United States Secret Service, the Association of Retired Police Officers of D.C., the Army and Navy Club of Washington D.C. and the Touisset Country Club.
A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, in addition to his wife of 43 years, survivors include: three daughters, Kimberly R. Pedersen (Donald) of Burke, VA, Kristine R. Ribas (Anthony) of Silver Spring, MD, and Karin Riley of Alexandria, VA, four grandchildren: Riley and Caroline Pedersen, Caitlyn and Anna Ribas, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
His funeral will be held Saturday October 30, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 945 Main Rd. Westport. Visiting hours Friday 4-7 PM in the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE at CHERRY PLACE, 178 Winter St. Fall River. Memorial Contributions in his honor may be made to the ALS Assocation, 7507 Standish Place, Rockville, MD 20855. Burial in Beech Grove Cemetery, Westport.
Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, November 5, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in Cathedral St. Matthew, 1725 Rhode Island Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20036 - Reception to follow 11:30 a.m. at the Army/Navy Club, 901 17th Street NW, Washington, DC 20036.
