Mary M. (Hogarty) Sliwa, age 88, of Westport, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Clifton Rehabilitation Nursing Center with family members by her side. She was the wife of the late Edward T. Sliwa, Sr.
Born in Trenton, NJ, a daughter of the late John Hogarty and the late Sophie (Rafalski) Miller, she was a long time resident of Westport.
She attended St. Mary’s Cathedral School in Trenton, NJ, and worked as an inspector for Firestone and then Ideal Laundry for many years. Mary was a communicant of Our Lady of Grace Church.
She is survived by her eleven children, Joan Souza of Somerset, Henry T. Sliwa and his wife Margueriate of Fall River, Barbara Rezendes and her husband Joseph of Somerset, Mary Lou Cookson-Schanck and her husband Ernest of Florida, Patricia Fortier and her husband Jean of Fall River, Deborah Faggioli and her husband Paul of Westport, Catherine Sliwa and her companion Paul Rybka of Dartmouth, John Sliwa of Brockton, Carolyn Maynard of Warwick, RI, Brenda Tavares and her husband Paul of Westport and Susan Rawnsley and her husband Christopher of Portsmouth, RI; 28 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; one niece and one nephew. She was the mother of the late Edward T. Sliwa, Jr. and sister of the late John and Henry Hogarty.
Mary’s family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to all of the staff at Clifton. They will be forever grateful for the care, love, and compassion that they provided Mary.
Her Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at 10:00AM in Our Lady of Grace Church, 569 Sanford Rd., Westport. Visiting hours Monday from 4:00 – 7:00 PM in Waring-Sullivan Homes of Memorial Tribute at Cherry Place, 178 Winter St., Fall River. Burial in Notre Dame Cemetery, Fall River.
