Born in Fall River, a daughter of the late Frank and Annie (Lyden) Newton, she spent her youth in Fall River and lived in Haverhill for many years before returning back to the city.
A graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School, class of 1941, she worked as a secretary at Har-Lee Manufacturing in Fall River, McGregor and McGregor Law Offices in Haverhill, and for the IRS before retiring in 1979.
A longtime volunteer at Catholic Memorial Home, she was a member of the Niagara Senior Citizens Club, serving as its Vice-President and a Sunshine Lady.
She is survived by three nieces: Kathleen Anthony of Durham, NC, Patricia Buma and her husband Paul, Maryanne Havalotti and her husband Daniel all of Douglas, MA, two nephews: Timothy Newton and his wife Maryann of Whitinsville, Steven Cabral of AZ, brother-in law: John Barboza and several great-nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Francis “Pop” Newton and Ruth Cabral Barboza and sister-in-law of the late Florence Newton.
Her Funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at 8:30AM from the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Cherry Place, 178 Winter St., Fall River, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00AM in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Spring St., Fall River. Visiting hours prior to her Mass from 8:30 to 9:30AM in the Funeral Home. Contributions in her honor may be made to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, 251 Post St., Suite 600, San Francisco, CA 94108.
