Born on March 2nd, 1956 to Dr. Eugene F. Sullivan, Jr. and Rita I. (Gallagher) Sullivan, Ken was raised in Somerset, Massachusetts and attended St. Joseph's Elementary School. He attended Somerset High School for three years and graduated first in his class from Bridgton Academy in Maine. While at Somerset High School, he was a member of the Cross-Country Team which was later inducted into the Somerset High School Athletic Hall of Fame. While attending Bridgton Academy, he was a member of the Ski Team as well as the Varsity Soccer and Cross-Country teams.
After attending Providence College and Boston University, he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a Combat Medic with the 75th Ranger Regiment, 1st Battalion for two terms of service, training at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Following his military career, he was employed in the hospitality industry, and also as a commercial fisherman, harvesting lobster, local species and spending a season fishing for crab in the Bering Sea. For several years he worked as Second Mate on the H.M.S. Bounty, both in Fall River, Massachusetts and St. Petersburg, Florida. He ended his career working for Moran Towing Company, traveling in and out of ports on the Eastern Seaboard, Gulf Coast, the Caribbean and South America. While employed by Moran, Ken attended the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, obtaining his 500 Ton Captains License.
Adjunct to his military service, Ken was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Alvaro E. Vieira Post 5390. Enjoying camping, hiking, skiing and canoeing, he was an avid outdoorsman. He was a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club, having hiked substantial portions of the trail in several sections.
Ken is survived by his two sisters, Elizabeth Fournier and Mary Jane Marchand (Robert). Additionally, he is the uncle of Shauna and Shane Fournier (Tina,) Kevin Marchand (Rhiannon,) and John Marchand. He was blessed with seven great nephews and nieces: Aiden and Emma Fournier; Anderson, Carly, Wesley, Calvin, and Ellis Marchand.
Ken will be laid to rest with full military honors at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter, Rhode Island on Saturday, June 19th, 2021 at 10:30 am.
