Giuseppe (”Joseph” “Peppino”) Carlozzi, 80, a retired tailor of Fall River passed away on Thursday, June 27, 2024 at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the loving husband of Lucia (Ialenti) to whom he had been married for the past 56 years. Born in Campolieto, Italy, he was the son of the late Carlo Alberto and Rosa (De Vita) Carlozzi.
Joseph learned the art of tailoring in the Renaissance citadel of Florence, Italy. After mastering his craft, he returned to Campobasso, where he opened an appliance store with his older brother, Rocco. Shortly afterward, he married and emigrated to the United States with his young bride. In 1969, Joseph started working at Darwood Manufacturing and eventually rose to the position of supervisor. In 1978, he became a U.S. citizen. Joseph continued working at Darwood Manufacturing until 1985 when he opened Carlozzi Tailor Shop, fulfilling his American dream. Affectionately known as Mr. Carlozzi by his clients, he proudly owned and operated the shop until 2013. He cherished the time spent with his clients and often spoke fondly of them even after closing his doors.
His genuine spirit was cherished by all; he loved making people laugh and also enjoyed music. Many play the accordion but “Peppino” made the accordion play. Passionate about music, he also loved dancing and took lessons with Lucia. Their dances were a beautiful symphony and were sometimes amusing to watch as they playfully vied for the lead. Spending time with his family while eating pasta, sweets and/or ice cream were the simplest pleasures life offered him. And nothing topped an evening more than an espresso made by either one of his sons.
His children admired him for his ability to do almost anything - like a Jack-of-all-trades. They will recall his sayings with fondness: “It’s not what you make but what you save.” “I’m the king of this castle.” “If you don’t like the laws in this house, you can go out of two doors - the front door and the back door - and if you don’t like the doors, I have ten windows you can go out of!” “Nobody loves you like your parents because they want you to do better than they did.” “Always take care of yourself first.” And finally, “remember to always be humble (L’umiltá vale).”
Along with his wife, he leaves behind his daughter, Rosamaria Carlozzi of South Dartmouth; his sons: Carlo Carlozzi and his wife Lindsay of East Greenwich and Dino Carlozzi and his wife Amanda of Fall River; four grandchildren: Camilla Carlozzi and fiancé Ryan Novo, Carlo Carlozzi, III, Lia Carlozzi and Livia Xaykosy; his brother, Elviro Carlozzi and his wife Maria of Rome, Italy; his sister-in-law, Vincenza Petrucci of Campobasso, Italy; his sister-in-law Sandy Iammarrone of Fall River and many adored nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Rocco Carlozzi.
Giuseppe will return to his hometown, his final resting place, to be with his parents, in Campolieto, Italy, where services will be held.
Until we meet again, we will cherish the moments - now memories - over an espresso and hold you in our hearts.
