Ann (Melvin) Sullivan, age 85, of Westport, Mass. and Naples, Fla. passed into eternal peace after a long struggle with Alzheimers. She joins her husband Paul B. Sullivan, to whom she was happily married for 54 years.
Ann was born in Fall River, Mass., the older daughter of Malcolm "Mickey" Melvin and Veronica Melvin.
She attended the Dominican Academy, earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at Salve Regina and her Masters of Special Education from Bridgewater State University. For 10 years, she was a fourth-grade teacher at the Letourneau Elementary School and it was a profession in which she thrived. She left teaching when she and Paul adopted their two children.
Ann was an active member of several clubs, including the Acoaxet Club, Spindle Rock Club and Elephant Rock Beach Club (Westport, Mass.), and the Quail Creek and Bay Colony Club (Naples, Fla.). She was also involved in several book and bridge clubs, and the American Association of University Women. Athletic and social, Ann enjoyed tennis, golf and skiing, as well as entertaining. She was an avid reader, loved to dance and adored spending time with her grandchildren. Intelligent, elegant, the epitome of grace and beauty, Ann had many dear friends and was beloved by her family.
She is survived by one daughter, Julia S. Atwood and her husband Mark of Mansfield, Mass.; one son, John P. Sullivan and his wife Amanda of Centennial, Colo.; one sister, Julia M. Michaud and her husband Robert of Swansea, Mass.; four grandchildren, Jackson and Sydney Atwood, and Abigail and Noah Sullivan; two nephews, Robert Michaud and his wife Kate, and James Michaud and his wife Kathleen.
There will be a Memorial Service on March 19, 2022 at 11:00 am at the United Congregational Church, 1 Commons, Little Compton, RI. The burial will be private. Friends and family will be invited to a celebration of life at a later date in the spring.
