Jesus N. Solis’ 98 years of life were a journey filled with family, adversity, growth, hard work and love. Despite the challenges that came his way, Jesus maintained a no worries, everything is fixable attitude that guided him through life. He enjoyed music, dancing, playing dominoes and most especially spending time with his beloved wife, Ninfa. To whom he devotedly cared for during her many years of struggling with Parkinson’s Disease.
He started working at a fruit stand at the young age of 15, where he was quickly promoted to fruit truck driver. At the age of 17, and at the beginning of WWII, he joined the Texas State Guard. Shortly after, he was recruited into the US Navy and was assigned to the USS Alywin & USS Clermont, where he bravely served his country in active combat throughout the Pacific until his honorable discharge in 1946.
Upon his return home, his father sent him off to learn the leather business with the goal of opening a family shoe store. Shortly after completing his apprenticeship, he returned home to start the family business and to train his siblings. The Solis Shoe Shop featured handmade shoes, boots, saddles, and leather accessories to service the local ranching community. As manufacturing processes became more automated, the shop was eventually closed and he went on to work in sales at the Tandy Leather Store in San Antonio, Texas. He soon returned to Hebbronville where he worked as a home building contractor and skilled carpenter. Jesus was self-taught and he could learn anything from math to plumbing. He spent the end of his career with the Jim Hogg County YACC program repairing low income homes, as a CDBG Supervisor for FHA homes, and lastly with the STDC Youth Program (skills training for dropout students), where he retired at the age of 72.
Special thanks to Margarita Beaz, Clarissa Trevino and the Meridian Nursing Home staff for their loving care for our Dad, Buelito and Great Buelito.
