Joan Kay Duncan, 79, of New Athens, passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2024. She was born on April 6, 1944 in Belleville, IL to Jack Todd and Hazel (Dickerson) Muskopf and raised by her mother and step-father, Alfred "Bones" Muskopf in Baldwin, IL. Joan moved to Houston, TX, where she obtained her Master’s Degree and became a dedicated nurse practitioner. She was a passionate advocate for women’s health. She spoke at many conferences and won the Who’s who in American Nursing Award and the Outstanding Alumni Award. Joan was also a member of The Association of Women’s Health Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN). Her commitment to healthcare and her tireless efforts of ensuring women’s well-being left a mark on countless patients and colleagues. Joan also enjoyed shopping, traveling with Larry, photography and was an avid cat lover. She was a member of the New Athens Garden Club and Lions Club and was a LIFT member. Joan will be remembered for her kindness and compassion that touched the lives of many. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors left to cherish her memory include her three children, Tommy (Linda) Thompson, Marsha (Marty) Degenhardt and Kelly (Scott) Beggs; grandchildren, Michael Thompson, Mindy (Jake) Owens, Malori (Matt) Franzen, Jennifer (Eric) Lyon, Joshua (Kristin) Degenhardt, Ryan (Ashley) Degenhardt, Clayton (Savaunna) Williams, Amanda (Nathan) Kehoe and Nate Beggs; great-grandchildren, Mila, Ella, Layla, Josie, Leeander, Harrison, Weston, Emma, Avery, Scott, Liam, Aubrey, Trysten, Kaylee, Evelyn, Ara, and Tyler; brother, Jimmy (Sharon “Chick”) Seiber; sisters, Betty Middendorf, Mary (Buster) Kirkpatrick; step-sisters, Shirley Bridges. Joan was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Larry Duncan; and sister, Vicky Price and step-sister, Judy Carter.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 30, 2024 at 2:00pm in Lake View Funeral Home, 5000 N. Illinois St., Fairview Heights, IL 62208 with a visitation from 12:00pm until time of service. Entombment will follow in Lake View Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Memorial contributions can be made to the Belleville Area Humane Society or the American Cancer Society.
