Born in New Bedford, he was a lifelong area resident. John graduated from New Bedford High School and the former Kinyon-Campbell Business School. He served his nation in the United States Army during WWII, obtaining the rank of 1st Sergeant.
During his many years of employment as an accountant, he worked at Madewell Manufacturing and Stevens Home Improvements.
John loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and attending their activities and sporting events. He enjoyed golf, traveling and enjoyed the ocean and was also an avid New England sports fan.
He is survived by three sons, John “Jack” Alves, III and Susan Chase of Fairhaven, Steven Alves and his wife Cheryl of Rochester and James Alves and Carol Messier of Mattapoisett; his nine grandchildren, John David, Susan, Rachel, James, Michael, Katelyn, Ashley, Steven A. and Kimberly M.; his five great-grandchildren, Damien, Hunter, Wayne, Dylan and Noah. He was the father of the late David Alves.
John’s funeral service will be held on Friday, June 14, 2019 at 10:30AM in the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME at FAIRLAWN, 180 Washington Street, Fairhaven, MA 02919. Relatives and friends are invited.
