Gordon W. Barkhouse, 89, died Friday, March 4, 2011 at The Oaks, New Bedford. During his lifetime, he was fondly called “Flip” by his family and “Barky” by his friends. He was the husband of the late Anna A. (Zahoruko) Barkhouse, to whom he was married for 58 years. Born in Cambridge, MA, son of the late Ralph and Gretchen (Vroom) Barkhouse, he graduated from Malden High School in 1940. During World War II he served in the Merchant Marines.
Mr. Barkhouse was the former co-owner of Wareham Auto Parts. He was president of both the Plymouth and Marion Lions Clubs, and a member of the Wareham Elks. In 2003 he received his 50 year pin from the Pythagorean Lodge in Marion. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Marion.
Formerly of Boynton Beach, FL, Barky enjoyed golf, travel, playing cards, cooking, and reading. Most of all, he enjoyed being with his family.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Lemire of Marion, Susan Smith and her husband Barry of Marion, three grandchildren, Jennifer Lemire and husband Jason Kaufman, Karen Smith and husband Nathaniel Baer, Jeremy Smith and wife Michelle. He is also survived by four great grandchildren, Alasdair Smith, Flora Baer, Asher and Silas Kaufman. He was brother to Edwin and Frank Barkhouse, and the late Harry, Hubert and Ralph Barkhouse, Doris Coles and Nancy Figueiredo. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 26 at 2:30 PM at the First Congregational Church, 28 Main Street, Marion, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the First Congregational Church of Marion, PO Box 326, Marion, MA 02738.
