Antone “Tony” G. Gonsalves, Jr., 80, of Acushnet, passed away peacefully Monday, October 28, 2013 at home surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was the loving companion of June Silva of New Bedford, and widower of Alice T. (Medeiros) and of Dorothy (Ormonde).
Born in South Dartmouth, the son of the late Antone G. and Rose (Vieira) Gonsalves, after residing locally for the majority of his life, moved to Largo Florida before returning to this area.
Antone graduated from New Bedford High School in 1951 and Bentley School of Accounting and Finance in 1956. He served in the US Navy during the Korean War. Mr. Gonsalves was formerly employed as a letter carrier for the United States Post Office, New Bedford Branch 18, for several years prior to his retirement. Tony cherished time spent with his family, leaving loved ones with a lifetime of memories that will forever remain close to heart. He shared his love of jazz, blues, and big band music with his family. He enjoyed watching all sports but was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, Boston Bruins and New England Patriots. Travel and “road trips” to Shangri-La always brought happiness to him.
Survivors include his loving companion of six years; four sons, Antone C. Gonsalves and his spouse, Anna of Dartmouth, Joseph C. Gonsalves and his spouse, Scot Duback of Dennisport, Kevin M. Gonsalves and his companion, Janis Rockett of Fairhaven and Michael A. Gonsalves and his spouse, Michelle of Dartmouth; a daughter, Kathleen (Gonsalves) Sobral of Acushnet; four step-daughters, Deborah Mascarenhas and her spouse, Peter of New Bedford, Donna J. Hickman and her spouse, Cecil of Acushnet, Darlene Thomas and her spouse, Tommy of Acushnet, and Dara Souza of New Bedford; several grandchildren and great grandchildren whom he loved dearly, and several nieces and nephews.
He also leaves two sisters, Mary L. Gonsalves and Bernice (Gonsalves) Perry and her spouse, Ronald, both of New Bedford. He was predeceased by his brother, Roger Gonsalves, loving daughter-in-law, Michelle (Menard) Gonsalves and his son-in-law and good friend, Atty. Russell Sobral.
Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral service, Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 9 AM in the Trinity Lutheran Church, 16 Temple St., Fairhaven. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. John Cemetery, New Bedford. Visiting hours Friday 4-8 in the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute, Fairlawn, 180 Washington St., Fairhaven.
